Terry and the Pirates Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-30-35 (Chicago Tribune/NY News Syndicate, 1935). Heroic Terry Lee, Pat Ryan, and "Connie" Confucius have urgent business with a famous explorer -- but a snooty doorman gives them the bum's rush. Then the explorer shows up and ushers the pals inside, right under the doorman's annoyed gaze. A nice touch of humorous one-upsmanship from one of the certifiably great high-adventure cartoonists. Expert use of black-spotting to emphasize figures, blue wash to denote shading, and whiplash timing. Such qualities bespeak the influence of master artist Noel Sickles upon Caniff's developing command of narrative thrust. Ink and blue tint over graphite. Inscribed to comics historian Don Phelps, whose 2001 book Reading the Funnies: Looking at Great Cartoonists throughout the First Half of the 20th Century is an essential volume.
