Wash Tubbs ranks high among the comics' historically great features - and its "Whaling Ship" narrative arc (represented here) is among the most famous adventures in the history of comic-strip storytelling: A seminal, serialized graphic novel from a day before there was such a term as graphic novel. This near-climactic episode epitomizes the sarcastic axiom "no good deed unpunished" as heroic Captain Easy takes a bawling-out for rescuing his ship's despised first mate from a near-drowning. (Note: Captain Easy is not the ship's captain; that is merely the character's familiar name.) The extended story can be seen in full in an essential book called The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics. Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board with an image area of 24.5" x 5.5". Toning and handling wear commensurate with age. A vertical fold was created by the artist for file-drawer storage. Very Good condition.
